Nancy
Redmond came to Long Beach City College in 1978
as newspaper adviser to the Viking
and the only instructor in the journalism program.
In 1980, with photo department faculty, she
founded the college magazine, City.
In 1984, she and her students, including current
lab technician Jim Truitt, established in-house
typesetting and design of the then-weekly Viking,
making LBCC the first college in the state to
use Macintosh-powered typesetting and layout
for its newspaper.
Under
her advisement, Viking and magazine
students have won national, state and/or regional
awards every year. Many of her students have
gone on to professional careers in magazine
editing, desktop publishing, newspaper reporting
and editing, TV production, and advertising/public
relations. She was honored as a master teacher
at a national “Great Teachers” conference
at the University of Texas in Austin. Active
in the statewide Journalism Association of Community
Colleges, she served as faculty president of
the Southern California section from 1983-1984.
Nancy
has two master’s degrees, one in journalism
from UCLA, where she graduated first in her
class, and one in English from CSUDH. She received
her B.A. in radio/television and English from
the University of Michigan where she was elected
to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors.
In addition to teaching experience in English
and journalism, she has professional experience
in reporting, magazine writing and production,
TV news broadcasting, public relations, and
desktop publishing. She’s produced everything
from 50-page magazines to PTA newsletters.
Today
she enjoys teaching mass communication, free-lance
writing, City magazine, literature,
and desktop publishing, a class she created
in 1985. She keeps the journalism program’s
computer and web technology as current as possible
and she serves on the English Department's technology
committee.
Nancy
recently returned from sabbatical leave where
she researched college and university online/web-enhanced
courses, visited professional news organizations,
web-enhanced her courses, and updated the newspaper/desktop
publishing software and the journalism website.
She is excited about the possibilities of the
web and looks forward to discussing the latest
trends with her students in English and journalism.
With
two sons in college, Nancy understands the challenges
students face. When she’s not teaching,
she enjoys reading and traveling throughout
the world.
