Born
and raised in Chicago, Illinois, I moved to
Los Angeles to attend UCLA. Since neither of
my parents graduated from high school and I
was the first person in my extended family to
attend college, I was very motivated to get
a good education.
I
majored in English and graduated magna cum
laude with a B.A. in 1991. I enjoyed studying
literature so much that I decided to pursue
a graduate degree in English. I earned my M.A.
and Ph.D. in English at UCLA. My area of emphasis
was American Literature, and I wrote my dissertation
on postmodern coming-of-age novels by women
writing in the United States.
While
in graduate school, I worked as an instructor
in the UCLA Writing Program and English Department
teaching Freshman Composition and Introduction
to Literature. I also worked as a teaching assistant
for a wide variety of literature courses (The
American Novel, Contemporary American Drama,
American Fiction since 1945, Chicano Literature,
British Literature 1832 to the present). In
addition, I worked as an editor in the Department
of Physics, as a research assistant to professors,
and as an academic counselor.
In
the Fall of 2002, I joined the English Department
at LBCC. I am a member of the English Department's
Technology Committee, and I am the web coordinator
responsible for creating and maintaining the
English Department's web site.
I am married to Skid of the band Love/Hate,
and we have two incredible daughters. In my
spare time, I like to swim, run, read, and listen
to music.
